Key Findings
Affective Polarization
This type of polarization is less about differences in policy views (which is known as issue polarization) and more about deep-seated emotional and social divides between groups.
What we ask:
How would you rate your feeling towards Democrats? How would you rate your feeling towards Republicans?
How Americans Assess the Parties

Percent of Democrats who support: [[ data.violence.support_by_party.dems.violence1 ]]%
Percent of Democrats that Republicans think support: [[ data.violence.support_by_party.reps.violence1_perception ]]%
Percent of Republicans who support: [[ data.violence.support_by_party.reps.violence1 ]]%

Support for Democratic Norms
A democratic norm refers to an informal, unwritten rule or expectation that guides political behavior and maintains the stability and functionality of a democracy. These norms help ensure that democratic processes and institutions are respected, even in situations where the formal laws or constitutions may not provide explicit guidance.
We present respondents with an action against that violates a series of democratic norms and then ask whether they support or oppose that action.
Support by Type of Norm Violation
- Ignoring Court Decisions
- Reducing Polling Stations
- Use of Executive Orders
- Media Censorship
- Party Loyalty
What we ask:
Percent of Democrats who support: [[ data.norms.norm_violation_support_by_party.dems.norm_judges ]]%
Percent of Democrats that Republicans think support: [[ data.norms.norm_violation_support_by_party.reps.norm_judges_perception]]%
Percent of Republicans who support: [[ data.norms.norm_violation_support_by_party.reps.norm_judges ]]%
Percent of Republicans that Democrats think support: [[ data.norms.norm_violation_support_by_party.dems.norm_judges_perception]]%
