The data

The data are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license (CC BY 4.0): use, share and adapt them for any purpose, including commercial use, as long as you credit the source. Cite: Westwood, S. J., & Lelkes, Y. (2024). America's Political Pulse [Data set]. https://americaspoliticalpulse.com/data.

One exception: caption text from broadcasters and video platforms in the state floor speeches file, and campaign-website text in the websites file, remain under their sources’ terms, not CC BY 4.0. The outside sources, their terms and the credit each asks for are listed on the Open data page.

Tweets are given as post ids without their text, because X’s terms let us share ids but not the posts. Survey data are aggregates; we never release individual responses. The data come as they are, without warranty: tell us if you find an error.

Back to topNext: Accounts and the API

Accounts and the API

  • One account per person. Keep your API key to yourself: don’t share it, publish it or build it into software others use.
  • Respect the limits (60 requests a minute and 10,000 a day, and 100 downloads a day, unless we have raised yours). Don’t try to get around them, for example with several accounts.
  • We may suspend an account or revoke a key that breaks these terms or puts the service at risk, and we may change the limits or the API, with notice where we can.
  • The service is provided as is, without warranty, and may be unavailable at times.

Back to topNext: What we keep

What we keep

For an account we keep your email address, name, institution, sector and intended use, the date you accepted these terms, and when you last signed in. We count your API requests per day (by kind of resource) and log which files you download each day. We keep only a fingerprint of your API key, never the key.

We use this to run the service, enforce the limits and report, in aggregate (for example, the share of users from universities), how the data are used. We never sell it or share it. You can edit your details or delete your account at any time from the account page; deleting removes your name, institution, use and email and revokes your key, and only anonymous counts remain.

On americaspoliticalpulse.com we use Google Analytics to count visits and the pages people view. It sets cookies and sends Google your browser’s details and your IP address. Visitors in the European Union and the rest of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland see a banner first, and Google Analytics stays off for them unless they accept. It is not used on the sign-in, account or admin pages, and it never receives your account details. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings at the foot of every page. Google’s use of the data is covered by its privacy policy.
